Soyombo Freed: FIJ Founder Released After Army Detention

ⓒ Arise News

Fisayo Soyombo, the founder of the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ), has been released from Nigerian Army custody. This follows significant media attention and public pressure. FIJ confirmed the release on their X account, addressing the Army’s accusations against Soyombo.

The Army’s claims linked Soyombo to illegal oil bunkering activities. FIJ strongly refutes this, calling it a misrepresentation of the facts. While relieved by Soyombo’s release, FIJ remains concerned for his safety, given the amount of information he shared with the Army during his detention.

The detention sparked widespread condemnation from journalists, human rights advocates, and civil society groups who viewed it as an assault on press freedom.
