ⓒ The Age

Victorian schools’ performance on the 2024 NAPLAN tests has been released, providing parents with valuable insights into their children’s education. The Age’s interactive guide allows families to easily access their school’s results from the March exams, which were taken by over 300,000 students across Victoria in years 3, 5, 7, and 9.

The results are presented alphabetically, not ranked by achievement, and reflect raw test data without adjustments for socioeconomic factors. For weighted data, parents can refer to the MySchool website.

ACARA CEO Stephen Gniel emphasized that NAPLAN’s primary goal is to improve educational outcomes. He stated that the organization rarely encounters schools manipulating results, and that the focus remains on tracking literacy and numeracy skills. Gniel highlighted the commendable performance of schools in disadvantaged areas, acknowledging their remarkable achievements given the challenges they face.

Deborah Grossek, deputy president of the Victorian Principals Association, noted that schools use NAPLAN data for in-depth analysis of student performance, identifying learning gaps and informing teaching strategies. However, she clarified that NAPLAN results are just one element of a school’s overall quality, with factors such as inclusivity and student wellbeing programs equally important in parental considerations.

The release of the NAPLAN results offers a multifaceted view of education in Victoria, prompting reflection on the role of standardized testing in assessing school performance and informing future educational improvements.
