ⓒ Irish Times

Miriam O’Callaghan, the renowned RTÉ broadcaster, is celebrating a significant milestone in her life: the completion of her youngest child’s secondary education. Her youngest son, James, recently graduated, marking the end of an era of school runs, parent-teacher meetings, and countless school events for the mother of eight. O’Callaghan shared her joy, stating that instead of sadness, she feels a sense of relief and celebration. She lightheartedly commented on the numerous parent-teacher meetings, Christmas concerts, and Nativity plays she’s attended over the years.

While acknowledging the challenges faced by many parents, O’Callaghan expressed profound gratitude for her eight healthy children. She also highlighted the dedication and resilience of carers who navigate more difficult circumstances. Although four of her children still reside at home, this marks a significant shift in her family dynamic. The broadcaster is now embracing a newfound sense of freedom and ‘me time,’ something she admits she often took for granted during the busy school years. She plans to dedicate this time to herself and focus on her career, a balance she’s successfully maintained throughout her children’s education. O’Callaghan fondly reflected on her career alongside motherhood, stating that she always made time for herself while raising her family. She looks forward to a future free from the demands of school drop-offs and leaving certificate preparations.

This new chapter for O’Callaghan represents a significant life transition for many Irish families, highlighting the unique challenges and rewards of raising a large family amidst a demanding career.
