Lidia Thorpe Stands Firm After Senate Suspension Over Racism Row

Senator Lidia Thorpe has firmly defended her actions after she was suspended for tearing up a motion by Pauline Hanson and gesturing towards fellow senators. The incident escalated following accusations of racism directed at Senator Payman, who was born in Afghanistan, by Hanson. Thorpe described Hanson’s actions as ‘disgusting’ and criticized the ongoing racism in the Senate, stating, ‘I am not one to stand or sit silent and allow this to happen. I would do it again.’ Thorpe, who was suspended for the remainder of the sitting week, expressed her frustration over how parliament addresses racism and lamented being labeled the ‘naughty little Blak girl.’ She pointed out the double standards in how white individuals are treated versus people of color when it comes to racist remarks. Government Senate leader Penny Wong condemned Thorpe’s behavior, emphasizing that all Australians deserve to feel safe at work. Despite the suspension, Thorpe is determined to continue raising awareness about racism, insisting that there must be an inquiry into the matter in parliament. She also highlighted the timing of her suspension, suggesting it was convenient as it coincided with a critical vote on a bill addressing genocide. Thorpe has announced her intention to participate in protests supporting this bill, reaffirming her commitment to combat racism in all its forms within parliament and beyond.
