In the Fall of 2023, just after a significant strike in the entertainment industry, I found myself reflecting on the months spent picketing for better wages and protections. With the strike dragging on longer than expected, many in the industry, including myself, faced financial and emotional struggles. However, as the holiday season approached, an unexpected opportunity arose. I received a script for a light-hearted holiday movie titled ‘Our Little Secret,’ featuring none other than Lindsay Lohan. The role was for a character named Leonard, a man in his sixties, which initially made me hesitant, as playing older roles is often frowned upon in Hollywood. But given the scarcity of work, I decided to embrace the opportunity, even if it meant adjusting my appearance and stepping outside of my comfort zone.
As a seasoned actor, I had played numerous roles, including memorable parts on shows like ‘Scandal.’ However, Leonard’s character had limited dialogue and appeared infrequently in the script, which made me anxious about taking on what felt like a minor role. After discussions with my representatives, who encouraged me to hold out for something better, I took a step back to reconsider.
I recalled advice from my mentor, Shonda Rhimes, about the importance of seizing opportunities when they arise. So, I decided to say ‘yes’ and accepted the role. The month spent filming in Atlanta with an incredible cast, including Kristin Chenoweth and Ian Harding, turned out to be transformative. We forged genuine friendships and crafted a believable family dynamic that elevated the story.
Under the direction of Steven Harek, our collaborative efforts allowed Leonard’s character to evolve, becoming more integral to the narrative as our on-screen family navigated various challenges. As the film’s premiere date on Netflix approached, I realized that saying ‘yes’ not only led to a fulfilling experience on set but also rekindled my passion for acting and storytelling. ‘Our Little Secret’ premieres on November 27th, showcasing the importance of creating a sense of family both on and off the screen.
