Debbie Nelson, the mother of renowned rapper Eminem, passed away at the age of 69. Her death was confirmed by Eminem’s long-time representative, Dennis Dennehy, in an email on Tuesday. While the cause of death wasn’t disclosed, it’s known that Nelson had been battling lung cancer.

Nelson’s complex relationship with her son, whose real name is Marshall Mathers III, was a frequent theme in Eminem’s music. Songs like “Cleaning Out My Closet” openly addressed their tumultuous past. However, later works, such as the Oscar-winning “Lose Yourself,” hinted at a softening of their bond.

Their strained relationship also led to legal battles. Nelson pursued and settled two defamation lawsuits against Eminem stemming from comments he made in interviews and media appearances. She later published a memoir, “My Son Marshall, My Son Eminem,” offering her perspective on their lives together.

Despite their difficult history, Eminem’s recent success highlights a poignant backdrop to Nelson’s passing. He was recently awarded Best Hip-Hop Act at the 2024 MTV Europe Music Awards, and his induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2022 cemented his legacy in music history. Adding to the emotional mix, Eminem announced last month that he’s expecting his first grandchild, a joyous occasion that now carries a bittersweet undertone.
