Eloise Sisley Beda: A Life of Love and Dedication Remembered

CORTLAND, Ohio – Eloise Sisley Beda, aged 97, peacefully passed away on November 24, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of love and commitment to her family and community. Born on February 1, 1927, in Kinsman, Ohio, Eloise was the daughter of Rodney and Maude Moore Sisley and grew up in a family of seven sisters. She attended Kinsman High School, which required a lengthy bus commute from their rural home. After graduating at 17, she pursued higher education at Youngstown College, using creative means to navigate the challenges of World War II, including catching a train to school. Eloise graduated in 1948 with a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education and briefly taught in the Youngstown Public School system before resigning due to a policy against married teachers.

In July 1949, she married Alfred Carl Beda, and they shared a joyful life together filled with adventures, including a honeymoon road trip to New York City and travels to far-off places like Morocco. The couple raised three children in Cortland/Bazetta Township, proudly watching them all graduate from college and pursue careers in the arts. They were active members of the Optimist Club for over 45 years, contributing to community projects, including the development of local baseball fields.

Eloise and Al shared many interests, from baseball to flea markets, and co-authored a historical book about Al’s military experiences during World War II. After a break from teaching, Eloise returned to the profession in 1966, earning her Master’s Degree in Education in 1982, and was beloved by her third-grade students.

She is survived by her son, Lynn, his wife Sandy, and her grandson Hudson. Eloise was preceded in death by her husband Al, son Dale, and grandson Myles. She will be remembered as a kind, intelligent, and spirited woman who made a significant impact on the lives of her students and family. No services are scheduled at this time, but her memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew her. A television tribute will air on November 27, with details provided for viewers.
