EFCC Arraignment of Former Kogi Governor Set for December

ⓒ The Guardian

The former governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Adoza Bello, will face arraignment on December 13, 2024, at a Federal High Court in Abuja. Justice Emeka Nwite issued this order on November 29, 2024, instructing the court registrar to notify Bello’s legal team. Bello’s arraignment stems from a 19-count charge of money laundering, totaling N80.2 billion, brought forth by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The prosecution, represented by Kemi Pinheiro, SAN, argued for the arraignment to proceed, emphasizing Bello’s presence in court as sufficient grounds, citing relevant sections of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA). Two Court of Appeal rulings from August 20, 2024, were referenced, supporting the prosecution’s claim. These rulings highlight that a defendant’s presence in court is satisfactory for arraignment, particularly given Bello’s previous non-appearances.

Bello, in his defense, requested a postponement, citing his legal team’s unavailability. Justice Nwite adjourned the case to December 13, 2024, to allow the prosecution to serve Bello’s legal counsel with the necessary documents. The court also directed the registrar to issue a hearing notice to Bello’s legal team and ordered his remand in EFCC custody.
