Mary T Sweeney, an Aontú candidate from Oldtown, Letterkenny, brings a unique background to the Donegal general election. With 18 years as an art and design lecturer and a pioneering role as Donegal’s first female auctioneer, Sweeney’s career reflects a blend of creativity and business acumen. Beyond her professional achievements, she is a prominent community figure, actively involved in fundraising for Letterkenny Hospital, adult literacy programs, and environmental initiatives as co-founder of the Letterkenny and Drumkeen Environment Group.
Sweeney’s dedication to her community extends to her involvement in pro-life advocacy, playing a crucial role in securing a ‘No’ vote in Donegal during the abortion referendum. As chairperson of the Letterkenny Hospital Action Committee, she champions improved healthcare services throughout the county.
Aontú’s platform, as championed by Sweeney, prioritizes ‘all lives matter,’ advocating for social justice, a fairer tax system, and robust economic growth through investment in Irish industries and small businesses. The party also advocates for a United Ireland and the preservation of Irish culture and language.
A significant element of Aontú’s plan is ‘Operation Shamrock,’ aimed at attracting Irish construction workers back from abroad. This initiative includes a relocation package of €5,000 in vouchers for flights and accommodation, along with a €10,000 tax credit spread over three years. Workers must commit to four years of employment in Ireland to benefit fully from the package. Furthermore, Aontú seeks to improve wages and working conditions for Irish construction workers to address the ongoing skills shortage.
