Veteran broadcaster Michael Rowland is leaving ABC’s News Breakfast after a remarkable 15-year run. Rowland, a beloved figure in Australian households, announced his departure this morning, stating he’ll be taking an extended break from the daily grind. He reassured viewers, however, that his time at the ABC isn’t over – he plans to return sometime next year.
Rowland’s exit follows those of co-hosts Lisa Millar and Tony Armstrong, marking a significant shift in the show’s lineup. His last day on air will be December 13th, giving viewers two more weeks to enjoy his signature brand of humour. While expressing gratitude for the opportunity, Rowland candidly admitted the demanding 3 a.m. start times had finally caught up with him.
Beyond his role on News Breakfast, Rowland served as the ABC News Network Anchor, covering countless significant events from across Australia and the globe. His reporting career spans over 35 years, beginning as a news cadet in 1987. He’s covered everything from Australian prime ministers to Hollywood A-listers, seamlessly transitioning between hard news and lighter segments. His career has included postings as a political reporter in Canberra, Washington correspondent (covering Obama’s election and the global financial crisis), business reporter, and state political reporter in NSW and Victoria.
Rowland expressed deep appreciation for his colleagues, the News Breakfast team, and most importantly, the loyal viewers who have tuned in over the years. His co-host, Bridget Brennan, hailed his dedication to strong journalism and public service. ABC News director Justin Stevens praised Rowland’s versatility and talent, noting his ability to handle both serious and lighthearted content with equal grace. The ABC is expected to announce Rowland’s replacement shortly.
