Sam Benastick: The Hiker Who Survived 50 Days in the Wilderness

In a remarkable turn of events, a hiker who went missing in the frozen wilderness of northern British Columbia has been found alive after an astonishing 50 days. Sam Benastick, an experienced outdoorsman, embarked on a solo camping trip to the remote Redfern-Keily Provincial Park on October 7, intending to return ten days later. However, when he did not come back by October 17, his family alerted the authorities.

Benastick was discovered on Tuesday by two men on their way to work, who recognized him and rushed him to the hospital. He was confirmed to be in good health considering the circumstances. During his ordeal, Benastick initially sought refuge in his car for a few days before moving to a creek where he camped for nearly two weeks. He later crafted a shelter in a dry creek bed and eventually made his way to the Redfern Lake Trail, where he was spotted by his rescuers.

Cpl. Madonna Saunderson of the B.C. RCMP expressed immense relief at the positive outcome, stating that after such a long time missing, there were fears that the search would not end well. Authorities believe that Benastick was equipped with a tarp, a black Osprey backpack, and other essential supplies when he set out on his adventure. He was also thought to have been riding a Honda dirt bike in the park when he disappeared.

Despite extensive search efforts involving police dogs and rescue teams, no trace of Benastick was found for weeks. The harsh conditions of the wilderness, with temperatures dipping below -20 degrees Celsius and accumulating snow, presented formidable challenges for the search and rescue operations.

Redfern-Keily Provincial Park is known for its stunning landscapes and rugged terrain, characterized by glaciers, alpine tundra, and diverse wildlife. The rescue of Sam Benastick serves as a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the dedication of the search and rescue teams who worked tirelessly to locate him. This story not only highlights the dangers of solo excursions into the wilderness but also the hope that remains in survival against all odds.
