Lindsay Lohan makes her return to the big screen with Netflix’s latest holiday offering, ‘Our Little Secret,’ a film that aims to redefine her image from tabloid star to credible actor. After a successful comeback with ‘Falling into Christmas’ and a disappointing experience with ‘Irish Wish,’ Lohan’s performance in this new film stands out as the best of her recent Netflix endeavors. While the film doesn’t reach great heights, it offers a more polished take on the traditional holiday rom-com, reminiscent of early 2000s hits like ‘Meet the Parents’ and ‘Four Christmases.’
Directed by Stephen Herek, who has a history of working with major stars, ‘Our Little Secret’ follows the story of Avery (played by Lohan) and her ex-boyfriend Logan (Ian Harding) as they find themselves unintentionally spending Christmas with the same family, unaware that their partners are siblings. This twist leads to a series of comedic misunderstandings and mishaps, including accidental consumption of weed gummies and awkward family interactions.
Despite its shortcomings, including a lack of laugh-out-loud moments, the film is saved by its brisk pacing and a talented supporting cast, which features ex-Saturday Night Live members and other notable actors. Kristin Chenoweth, in particular, shines as a sharp-tongued mother, adding much-needed energy to the film.
While the screenplay, penned by first-time writer Hailey DeDominicis, could have benefited from sharper wit and originality, ‘Our Little Secret’ still manages to be an enjoyable viewing experience, especially for fans of light-hearted holiday films. As the year wraps up, one can only hope that future comedies steer clear of tired tropes, like characters overindulging in edibles. For now, though, ‘Our Little Secret’ provides a satisfactory dose of holiday cheer, making it a worthy addition to Netflix’s festive lineup.
