In the fall of 2023, post-strike, I found myself reflecting on the state of the entertainment industry. After months of picketing for fair wages and better working conditions, I was eager to return to work. Just as the holidays approached, I received a script for a Netflix holiday film titled ‘Our Little Secret’, featuring Lindsay Lohan. The role offered to me was that of ‘Leonard’, a man in his sixties. This posed a significant challenge, as Hollywood typically encourages actors to play younger roles. However, with work being scarce, I was willing to embrace the opportunity, even if it meant donning Spanx and grey hair.
I had played a husband before, but this role came with the exciting prospect of working alongside Kristin Chenoweth, whom I greatly admired. After reading the script, I felt hesitant; my character had limited scenes and dialogue, leading me to question whether I wanted to be a background performer in a Christmas rom-com. My representatives suggested I wait for better offers, but I realized that waiting had left me stagnant for months.
Reflecting on my earlier aspirations as an actor, I decided it was time to overcome my ego and accept the role. In February, I flew to Atlanta to shoot the film, and it turned out to be one of the most rewarding experiences of my career. The cast, including Kristin, Ian Harding, and Lindsay, bonded quickly, creating a genuine sense of family that translated on screen. With encouragement from our director, Steven Harek, my character evolved into a significant part of the story, filled with depth and complexity.
As we filmed, Kristin and I developed a strong friendship, working to bring authenticity to our roles as a troubled couple with a rich history. Our Little Secret is set to premiere on Netflix on November 27th, and I couldn’t be more grateful for the journey that led me here. This experience has reminded me of the importance of saying ‘yes’ and embracing opportunities, no matter how small they may seem.
