A manhunt is underway following a double homicide in Rye, a coastal suburb on the Mornington Peninsula. A 29-year-old man and an unidentified woman were found dead early Monday morning at a house on Parson Street after a reported altercation. Police responded to reports of a disturbance around 4:00 am and discovered the victims with gunshot wounds. Despite emergency services’ efforts, both were pronounced dead at the scene.
Homicide detectives are appealing to the public for information to identify the woman and locate the suspected gunman, believed to have fled the scene. Police believe the individuals involved were known to each other, and the 29-year-old victim was the sole tenant of the property. Witnesses reported hearing yelling and gunshots, followed by a police helicopter arriving shortly after.
A neighbour described the scene as “just shocking.” Forensic investigators examined the property, noting tire marks and what appeared to be burn marks on the driveway. The investigation is ongoing, with police urging anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers.
The quiet coastal neighbourhood, popular with summer holidaymakers, is reeling from the violence. Police continue their search for the suspect and further details are expected later today.
