Giske’s Triumph: A Deepening Rift in Trøndelag Arbeiderpartiet

ⓒ Dagsavisen

Trond Giske’s victory in the Sør-Trøndelag Arbeiderparti nomination has sent shockwaves through the party. His win, while not entirely unexpected, was achieved through tactics that have left the party deeply divided and facing a potentially damaging fallout. The aftermath of the nomination saw the AUF (Arbeidernes Ungdomsfylking) withdraw all its candidates, citing Giske’s past behavior. Nine other candidates also withdrew, leaving Giske with a completely loyal slate.

The ensuing power grab has effectively placed Giske in complete control of the Trøndelag Arbeiderparti. His opponents, representing a majority of local party chapters in southern Trøndelag, feel betrayed and demoralized. Accusations of dirty tactics and blackmail have been leveled against Giske’s camp, further exacerbating the internal conflict.

Many Giske opponents have indicated they will not actively campaign for the party in the upcoming election. This mass exodus threatens the party’s visibility and support base outside of Trondheim, Malvik, Oppdal, and Røros—the only municipalities that strongly backed Giske.

While Giske remains confident, dismissing the internal conflicts as a closed chapter, the long-term consequences for the party remain uncertain. The deep divisions and loss of support represent a significant challenge, particularly for party leader Jonas Gahr Støre, who is already facing considerable pressure. The future of Trøndelag Arbeiderpartiet now hangs in the balance, its future uncertain and potentially bleak.
