Syrian rebels, led by the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), launched a major offensive, seizing control of large parts of Aleppo, a city previously held by the Syrian government since 2016. This marks the most significant challenge to President Bashar al-Assad’s regime in years. Dozens of Syrian soldiers were killed in the initial assault, forcing a government redeployment.

Russia, a close ally of Assad, responded swiftly with airstrikes targeting rebel positions in Aleppo and Idlib provinces. The Russian Defence Ministry reported these strikes were in support of the Syrian army. The intensity of the fighting has reignited concerns about the long-simmering Syrian civil war, particularly given the simultaneous conflicts in Gaza and Lebanon.

The White House National Security Council is closely monitoring the situation, expressing concern about Syria’s refusal to engage in a political process. They have denied any US involvement in the HTS offensive and called for de-escalation and a return to political negotiations.

The rebels’ advance has been rapid, aided by a perceived lack of Iranian-backed support for the Syrian government. They have captured Aleppo airport and the city of Maaret al-Numan, expanding their control in Idlib province. Images and videos circulating online show rebels celebrating in Aleppo, including posing with a toppled statue of Bassil al-Assad.

The Syrian government, while acknowledging the rebel gains, claims to be preparing a counteroffensive. The conflict’s geopolitical complexities are highlighted by the involvement of various international actors: Russia and Iran supporting Assad, and Turkey backing some rebel groups. Diplomatic efforts are underway, with Russian and Turkish foreign ministers discussing the situation and expressing serious concerns.

The fighting has caused significant civilian casualties, with reports of airstrikes hitting residential areas in Idlib, resulting in civilian deaths and injuries. The conflict’s impact extends beyond Syria, further destabilizing a region already grappling with multiple wars.
