Lindsay Lohan's Christmas Comedy: A Small Win for Netflix

Lindsay Lohan is back, proving she can still shine as a movie star, not just a tabloid figure. Her latest film, ‘Our Little Secret’, marks her third collaboration with Netflix, following her previous projects, ‘Falling into Christmas’ and the less favored ‘Irish Wish’. While ‘Falling into Christmas’ was a hit despite its quality, Lohan’s journey with Netflix has been a mixed bag. ‘Our Little Secret’ stands out as the best of the three, though that might not say much given the low expectations. This film attempts to break away from the typical Hallmark formula and channels the essence of early 2000s comedies like ‘Meet the Parents’ and ‘Four Christmases’. Directed by Stephen Herek, who has a history with major stars from that era, the film tries to attract an audience nostalgic for rom-coms with a bit more flair. The plot involves a convoluted deception where Lohan’s character, Avery, and her ex, Logan, end up spending Christmas with each other’s families without revealing their past relationship. This setup leads to a series of comedic misadventures involving cannabis gummies, underage drinking, and more. Despite some humorous moments, the film struggles to deliver consistent laughs, aided only by a talented cast including former ‘Saturday Night Live’ stars and the ever-charismatic Kristin Chenoweth. While Lohan and Harding offer decent banter, the script lacks the cleverness needed to elevate their performances. As we look ahead, one can only hope that future comedies will steer clear of overused tropes, like characters unwittingly overindulging in edibles. For now, ‘Our Little Secret’ is an acceptable holiday flick available on Netflix, though it leaves much to be desired.
